Which test is right for me?

Lactulose (Sibo Test)

We usually use lactulose for the Sibo test. Lactulose can reach even the deeper regions of the small intestine. Lactulose cannot be metabolized by the body itself; only intestinal bacteria can. The gases produced during the decomposition process (hydrogen and methane) are measured and chronologically classified. An early increase indicates bacterial activity in the small intestine.

Combination lactulose test/fructose test (Sibo test)

If the lactulose test is negative despite clear symptoms of syphilis, it is recommended to perform another fructose breath test. This ensures that no bacteria have been missed. The fructose test should be performed at least two days after the lactulose test to rule out any remaining lactulose gas in the intestines.

Fructose (fructose malabsorption test / Sibo according to new findings)

Fructose is normally metabolized in the small intestine. In cases of fructose malabsorption, this doesn't happen, and the fructose reaches the large intestine. Bacteria in the large intestine break down the fructose, producing hydrogen and methane. This is measured with our fructose test via breath. This allows us to detect fructose malabsorption (colloquially known as fructose intolerance).

Please note:

An existing SIBO can mask fructose malabsorption. In SIBO, bacteria mistakenly colonize the small intestine and prematurely break down fructose there. While bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) can be diagnosed, it doesn't provide any information about a possible fructose malabsorption.

Glucose (Sibo Test)

Glucose is suitable for detecting SIBO in the anterior segment of the small intestine. Glucose is absorbed by the small intestine in the first segment (high glycemic index). Therefore, SIBO can only be detected there; otherwise, there is no glucose left to detect SIBO in the posterior segment.
